IPTV on iPhone and iPad.
iOS has several solid IPTV players on the App Store. The only real friction is iOS background video restrictions and the absence of TiviMate. Both have workarounds.
01
App Store options.
| App | Cost | Supports | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPTV Smarters Pro | Free / paid tiers | Xtream Codes, M3U, EPG | Cross-platform (iOS, Android, TV). Familiar if you use it elsewhere. |
| GSE Smart IPTV | Free with premium | M3U, Xtream, XMLTV EPG | Best EPG grid on iOS. Supports AirPlay and Picture-in-Picture. |
| Flex IPTV | Paid (~$4.99) | M3U, Xtream | Clean interface, reliable on newer iPhones. No in-app upsell noise. |
02
Install and log in.
- 01
Search the App Store
Open App Store on your iPhone or iPad. Search for "IPTV Smarters Pro" or "GSE Smart IPTV". Both are legitimate apps with active updates.
- 02
Install and open
Install, then open the app. Approve any network access permission when asked.
- 03
Add your playlist
In Smarters: Add User → Xtream Codes or M3U URL. In GSE: + icon → Add playlist via URL or Xtream Codes. Enter your provider credentials.
- 04
Load EPG
Add your EPG URL in Settings. GSE: Edit playlist → XMLTV EPG URL. Allow a few minutes for the guide grid to fill in.
03
Background audio limits.
iOS suspends video playback when you switch to another app. This is a system-level behavior. The IPTV app is not broken.
What usually continues: audio. If you lock your screen while watching a sports channel, the audio may keep playing via the lock-screen media controls, even though the screen is off. This depends on the specific app and how it registers with the iOS audio session.
For watching while multitasking, Picture-in-Picture (PiP) is more useful. GSE Smart IPTV supports PiP. Tap the PiP icon while a channel is playing and the video floats over your other apps.
04
AirPlay to TV.
AirPlay from iPhone to Apple TV works cleanly with both Smarters and GSE. Start a channel, tap the AirPlay icon in the player, and select your Apple TV. The stream appears on the TV with no additional setup.
AirPlay to an AirPlay 2-compatible TV (Samsung, LG, Sony from 2019+) works similarly. The TV does not need an Apple TV box.
If you use Apple TV often, installing IPTV directly on the Apple TV is cleaner. See the Apple TV setup guide.
05
iPad differences.
iPads run the same iOS IPTV apps and the same restrictions apply. The advantage is screen size: iPads are comfortable for solo watching without a TV.
iPad Pro models with Apple Silicon (M1, M2) handle 4K HEVC decoding in hardware with no stutter. Even 4K streams at 50 Mbps play smoothly. Older iPad models handle 1080p easily.
Stage Manager on iPad (iPadOS 16+) lets you float the IPTV player in a window alongside other apps. Effective for watching a game while browsing.

FAQ
Which IPTV app is best for iPhone?
IPTV Smarters Pro and GSE Smart IPTV both have iOS builds on the App Store. GSE has a polished interface with a program guide grid. Smarters is good if you already use it on other devices and want one app for everything.
Can I watch IPTV in the background on iPhone?
iOS pauses video apps when you switch to another app, unlike Android. Audio may continue but video pauses. This is an iOS system restriction, not a bug in the IPTV app.
Can I cast IPTV from my iPhone to a Chromecast?
If the app supports Chromecast casting, yes. GSE Smart IPTV supports both AirPlay and in some builds Chromecast. Check the app's current version for Chromecast support since this feature has varied across updates.
Does IPTV work on older iPhones like iPhone 8 or X?
Yes, as long as the device runs a currently supported iOS version (iOS 16+). HD streams play fine on iPhone 8 hardware. 4K HEVC may stutter on very old devices, but 1080p is smooth.
Is there a TiviMate for iPhone?
No. TiviMate is Android-only. On iOS, GSE Smart IPTV offers a similar EPG grid experience. It is the most TiviMate-like option on the App Store.
