IPTV on Windows, Mac, and Linux.
Desktop IPTV does not get the polished TV-interface treatment that Firestick or Apple TV does. But VLC opens an M3U URL in under 10 seconds, and that gets the job done for most use cases.
01
Desktop player options.
Windows
Apps
- IPTV Smarters Pro (Microsoft Store)
- VLC (videolan.org)
- Kodi + IPTV Simple PVR
Notes
Smarters has the most IPTV-specific UI. VLC is a reliable fallback.
macOS
Apps
- IPTV Smarters Pro (Mac App Store or direct)
- VLC
- IINA
Notes
VLC and IINA both open M3U8 URLs directly from File → Open Network.
Linux
Apps
- VLC (apt/yum/flatpak)
- Kodi
- Celluloid (GNOME MPV)
Notes
VLC is universal. Kodi is the best option for a full TV guide experience.
02
Windows setup.
- 01
VLC: fastest start
Download VLC from videolan.org. File → Open Network Stream → paste your M3U URL (or a specific channel HLS URL). Playback starts immediately. No account or login needed in the player.
- 02
IPTV Smarters Pro
Search the Microsoft Store for IPTV Smarters Pro, or download from the developer's site. Add user with Xtream Codes or M3U. Full EPG grid and channel categories available.
- 03
Kodi with IPTV Simple PVR
Download Kodi from kodi.tv. Go to Add-ons → Install from repository → PVR clients → PVR IPTV Simple Client. Configure with your M3U URL and XMLTV EPG URL. This gives you the best guide grid on desktop.
03
macOS setup.
VLC for Mac: download from videolan.org or install via Homebrew (brew install --cask vlc). File → Open Network → paste M3U URL.
IINA is a macOS-native player that handles HLS streams cleanly. It respects macOS dark mode and system controls. Open the URL via File → Open URL. No EPG support but excellent for single-stream playback.
IPTV Smarters Pro has a direct download for macOS on the developer's site and is sometimes available via the Mac App Store. It gives you the full EPG and channel grid experience.
04
Linux setup.
VLC on Debian/Ubuntu:
sudo apt install vlc
Fedora/RHEL:
sudo dnf install vlc
After install, run vlc [your-m3u-url] or use the GUI Media → Open Network Stream menu.
Kodi on Linux via Flatpak:
flatpak install flathub tv.kodi.Kodi
Then configure the IPTV Simple PVR client inside Kodi as described in the Windows section above.
05
Browser playback.
Gloam and most IPTV services offer a web player you can access from any browser. No app install, no configuration. Useful for a quick check or watching from a shared computer.
Direct HLS URL in browser: paste an M3U8 stream URL into the address bar in Safari or use an extension like HLS.js for Chrome. This is a testing method, not a daily driver.
For mobile browsers, the dedicated iPhone/iPad app route is more reliable than browser IPTV on iOS.

FAQ
What is the best IPTV player for Windows?
IPTV Smarters Pro has a Windows desktop app. VLC plays M3U playlists directly. Kodi with the IPTV Simple PVR addon is feature-rich but takes more configuration. For occasional use, VLC is the lowest-friction option.
Does IPTV work on Mac?
Yes. IPTV Smarters Pro has a macOS build. VLC on macOS plays M3U URLs. IINA (a macOS-native player) also opens M3U8 stream URLs. Infuse 7 on Mac supports M3U if you need a polished interface.
What is the best IPTV player for Linux?
VLC is the easiest path on Linux. It installs from most package managers and opens M3U playlists. Kodi with the IPTV Simple PVR addon gives you a proper TV guide grid on a desktop but takes more setup.
Can I watch IPTV in a browser?
HLS streams can play in modern browsers via HTML5 video. Most IPTV services offer a web player. Browser playback is functional for occasional use but dedicated players have better EPG, lower latency, and smoother experience.
Does VLC support EPG?
VLC can parse XMLTV EPG from an M3U playlist that includes EPG source tags. The EPG view is basic compared to TiviMate. For a full guide grid on desktop, Kodi with the TV guide plugin is more capable.
